Chapter 13

On Wednesday, Katie woke up with a song in her heart and an extra bounce in her step. Dancing with McGuire had left her on cloud nine, though she still didn’t know much about him. Her curiosity was slowly building to the point she was almost ready to burst. If only she’d asked him more questions at lunch she wouldn’t be feeling so completely in the dark about him. Knowing the truth was better than knowing nothing at all. For some reason, she had more hope in her heart about him than she’d had prior to the evening of dancing. She dressed quickly in black leggings and a magenta pink exercise shirt. She threw her hair up in a ponytail and slipped into her white sketchers with pink bobby socks and a pink scrunchy for her hair.

“Are you going to breakfast with me this morning?” her dad asked when she bounded down the knotty pine staircase from her loft bedroom overlooking the living room below.

“Can you bring me back a yogurt and some fresh fruit… maybe a bagel and cream cheese or a muffin?” she asked. “I’m going on my morning walk and then I’m going to work on my bridesmaid dress today for Amy’s wedding.”

“Sure, no problem,” he replied. “That works for me. I was thinking about another trail ride after breakfast at some point, but it’s trail number three and I heard it’s a long one.”

“Take your time then, Dad. I’ll be busy all day. I might stop by the gift shop this morning, too. Every time I try to do that it seems I get sidetracked.” She opened the fridge and reached for a bottle of fresh spring water.

“Katie, how about we take a western cooking class together tomorrow afternoon?” Her dad asked as he made a single cup of coffee from the Keurig coffee maker in the cabin. He’d finally looked around in the kitchen cupboards and drawers and discovered a few samples of coffee. Satisfied with his cup of morning goodness, he showed her the brochure with the calendar of events scheduled at the ranch that week.

“Sounds great, Dad! We’d finally get to do something together besides eat. It says here they’re having a chili cook-off. We’re all supposed to meet in the main house kitchen at three o’clock on Thursday.”

She set out for her morning walk toward the covered bridge while her father headed for breakfast at the main house. A call from Mom came in from Kentucky, followed by one from her friend Amy in Montana to ask how her dress was coming along. Her mom sounded cheerful as she was nearing the finish line of settling all of her grandmother’s affairs. Amy sounded happy to hear she would be working on the dress and had purchased fabric.

As she continued following trail number two beyond the little white church, a
